Engine number sticker
In addition to the numbers stamped onto the metal, Smart engines also have stickers on which the complete 14-character engine number is repeated. These stickers are on the top of the engine and easy to read.

On newer-type petrol engines, the engine number only appears as a short form (the so-called Smart engine number) of which the last four digits are identical with the 14-character engine number. (Example: 3B21 BJ4209)

Gearbox number:
Location on the Series 450 / 451 / 452
The image shows the gearbox as installed in the cradle (subframe) of a 451 Series Smart fortwo, without the body. Access to the sticker is very difficult when the gearbox is installed.
Location on the Series 454
The gearbox number is on the front underside of the bell housing (as seen in the direction of travel) and is relatively easy to find from below. It is stamped onto the bell housing and is also found on a sticker.

Errors on the gearbox sticker on the 454 Series
The serial number has been entered wrongly on the gearbox label of diesel-engined 454 Series vehicles (Smart forfour). In this serial number range (beginning with the letter “T”) the letter “O” is placed after the serial number. The correct entry should have been “0” (zero).
All diesel-engined vehicles of this series produced in the period from July to December 2004 (roughly 11 000 vehicles) have been affected. Diesel-engined vehicles can be identified by the model code 000 or 001.
Example:
WME454000….
WME454001…
Gearboxes with part number MN 900657, starting with serial number 0041263, and Gearboxes with part number MN 130195, starting with serial number 0042500, do not contain this error.

Radio Number:
The number of the radio installed when a car was made can be used to identify a particular vehicles
Locations in the vehicle
The radio number is on a sticker on the right-hand side of the radio. On older models it is also stamped onto the radio.

Colour Code Table:
The colour code is on the type plate
Details of the colours can also be found on the optional part of the type plate using the Smart option code for the colour of the TRIDION cell and the original colour of the customised body panels (“CBS” parts).
The frame colour is entered onto the Certificate of Conformity papers. As the colour of the added on parts may vary, this is not noted in the document.
