Ssang Yong vehicles can be identified from the following features:

Location : Vehicle identification number– On the wheel housing, at the front, on the right, on the Longeron or– in the footwell on the front passenger’s sideType Plate– In the engine compartment, on the cowl plate, on the right (until construction year 2006)– On the driver’s side door holm (from construction year 2006) Engine Number– Stamped or punched onto a smooth surface on the engine . Gearbox Number– Stamped or punched onto a smooth surface on the gearbox

 

Vehicle Identification Number:

Appearance of the stamped VIN

Depending on the model, the VIN is either punched or etched onto the vehicle in a straight line. The VIN on all models has a star at both ends. Each model may have a different symbol, but the symbols on the VIN are always the same. All characters on a VIN are the same size and the same distance apart. The ‘0’ on the Rodius has a slash going from the bottom left to the top right (see the example below).

Specific feature:

The last six characters of the VIN and the paint code (comprising three letters) of each vehicle are etched onto the radiator yoke on vehicles made from model year 2006 onwards. The ‘0’ here also has a slash through it.

 Type Plate:

Location of the type plate

The type plate on all vehicles produced from construction year 2006 onwards is on the B-pillar on the driver’s side.

 Composition and appearance of the type plates

Older models (such as the Korando and Musso) had aluminium type plates which were riveted onto the front bulkhead of the engine compartment. All newer vehicles have a black type plate sticker. As well as the usual entries (manufacturer, approval number, VIN and weights), SsangYong type plates also have a paint code comprising three letters.

Engine Number:

  G23D (petrol) engines the engine number is stamped onto the upper left rear side of the cylinder block, on the right, as seen in the direction of travel.

On G32D (petrol) engines the engine number is punched onto the lower area of the cylinder block exhaust manifold, on the right, as seen in the direction of travel.

On D20DT and D27DT Diesel engines the engine number is punched onto the lower area of the cylinder block, behind the inlet elbow pipe, on the left, as seen in the direction of travel.

Appearance of the engine number

The engine number is punched/needle-punched or stamped on.

One or more stickers containing various barcodes, including the complete engine number, have also been noted. The stickers can be seen when the plastic engine covering (mainly on the right in the direction of travel) has been removed.

As far as is presently known, it is only possible to work backwards to match an engine number with a VIN through the importer in the country where the vehicle was sold. Otherwise matching engine numbers to VINs can only be done through the manufacturer, the SsangYong Motor Company.

Gearbox number:

The gearbox number can be used at the works to identify a specific vehicle.

The individual numbers on automatic gearboxes can only be matched with a particular VIN by the manufacturer (SsangYong Motor Company). However even the manufacturer cannot match a manual gearbox to a given VIN.

Colours:

On the type plate and, in the Rexton, also on the radiator crossmember, the color code is indicated (in the Rexton on the radiator crossmember after the 6 positions of the VIN).

Vehicle Keys:

SsangYong vehicles each come with two keys. However, up to five keys can be programmed in for each vehicle at the same time. A ‘Scan 100’ diagnosis apparatus is used for programming the keys. A ‘Scan 100’ can also be used to read out the 4-character key code. As far as is presently known, it is not possible to copy a key with this code. Replacement keys can be ordered from any authorised SsanYong dealer upon presentation of the vehicle registration document and proof of identity. There is no central register of replacement key orders.
