General Motors Corporation, six months after the premiere of the GMC Hummer EV electric pickup truck, introduced an SUV based on it with a shortened wheelbase. It will be available in early 2023.
GMC Hummer EV exterior design
The GMC Hummer EV pickup truck is GM’s first production electric vehicle of the new generation, developed on the ultium modular platform. Recall that at first GM called the word Ultium only the battery developed jointly with LG Chem for this platform, and now it calls the entire platform That way. The Ultium platform will form the basis of all key models of the Corporation for the next decade, including the new GM commercial brand BrightDrop.
GMC Hummer EV technical specifications
The GMC Hummer EV SUV is technically the same as a pickup truck, but it has a smaller wheelbase (3,218 mm vs. 3,445 mm) and, accordingly, less space for the battery located within the wheelbase. Up to the C-pillars, the pickup and SUV bodies are identical, the rear doors are interchangeable, the roof panels are removable, and they can be left in the garage or put in the front trunk. The third row of seats for the SUV is not provided.
If the pickups start shipping to the first customer’s next fall, the GMC Hummer EV SUV will have to wait until early 2023. The first in the series will be SUVs in the top and expensive version of Edition 1 with a three-engine powerplant (one on the front axle, two on the rear) with a total capacity of 842 HP at a price starting from $ 105,595. The battery capacity is still not called; the power reserve on a single charge is 483 km. For comparison, let’s say that the Edition 1 pickup truck has a capacity of 1014 HP and can travel 563 km on a single charge.
GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 with an extreme off-road package (Extreme Off-Road Package) starts at $ 110,595 and boasts “toothy” tires, additional underbody protection, reinforced semi-axles, front differential lock, and all-around cameras, two of which are located directly under the bottom. The power reserve on a single charge with an off-road package is reduced to 450 km.
The twin-engine version of the 634 HP EV 2X will go on sale in spring 2023 and start at $ 89,995. And the simplest version of the EV2 (starting at $ 79,995) will be available only in the spring of 2024: it differs from the EV 2X in reduced battery capacity, which is why the power reserve on a single charge is lowered from 483 to 402 km.
Due to the shorter wheelbase and shorter rear light, the SUV has more ramp and exit angles (the exact values have not yet been made public), and the u-turn diameter has been reduced from 11.3 to 10.8 m. Recall that the GMC Hummer EV has a fully-controlled chassis (the rear wheels can turn in any direction at an angle of up to 10 degrees) regardless of body type. The air suspension can vary the ground clearance in the range from 257 to 404 mm. There is a very convenient one-pedal off-road driving mode: when the accelerator pedal is released, it actively slows down until it comes to a complete stop.
GMC Hummer EV electric pickups and SUVs are unlikely to be officially delivered to United Kingdom in the coming years, but we have no doubt that such vehicles will be imported privately, and we will see them on our roads.
