The Volkswagen engine number in more recent 3 and 4-cylinder engines is located above the transition to the gearbox or an a surface-ground position on the front side of the engine near the gearbox.

N.B: From 1991 to 1995, the engine numbers saved onto the Volkswagen VIN Number were often incomplete due to computer problems. There are even engine series with numbers such as AB 000000 on the market. It should be pointed out that engine labeling is not required by law in Germany.

The engine identification letters are in addition also found on the technical service sticker in the boot and on new vehicles also on the type plate.
See Annex for a list of engine identification letters.
