The Chrysler VIN Number has also been placed on the engine control unit since model year 1994. But it can only be read off by an authorized Chrysler/Jeep dealer.
Since about model year 2000 however, it is also possible in addition to the VIN Number to read off the gearbox number, engine number and immobilizer number with the aid of a special reader known as a diagnostic tool.
In the United States, Chrysler auto are marketed in four different ways by the manufacturer, Chrysler Corporation, under the following brand names:

Chrysler Auto Jeep Cherokee (KJ)
The Chrysler VIN Number is embossed onto a metal plate 8.9 cm in length and 1.2 cm wide. The front face of the plate is anthracite and the rear face is chrome in color.
The characters are all 6 mm high. The “1” (without an upstroke), the 4(open on the left upper side) and the “8” (with a flattened top edge) are particularly noticeable.
The plates are fixed with hexagonal rivets, with rounded corners.
The characters shown above are stamped onto authentic material.
The VIN has an asterisk on its left and right extremities.
The Chrysler emblem and the word “Chrysler” are each embossed twice onto the plate.

Peculiarity on the Jeep Cherokee VIN, model year 1989, European version
Exception!!!
The VIN behind the windscreen on the Jeep Cherokee, MY 1989, differs from the VIN on the type plate (identification plate) located on the right inner wing, or on the front right of the longeron, and from the VIN given in the vehicle documents.
Example: VIN in the vehicle documents, type plate etc. 1JEMT785EKT435037
VIN behind the windscreen 1J4FJ78L1KL435037.
The reason for this is that in 1989, Jeep was taken over by the Chrysler Corporation. Therefore, exclusively for MY 1989, and only for the Jeep Cherokee, there was an internal works production number (behind the windscreen) and a VIN.
The vehicle documents refer especially to this under number 33, “Remarks”.
Chrysler Type Plate
Only Chrysler vehicles destined for the European market have type plates affixed to them.
Chrysler auto type plates are 89 mm long and 44 mm wide and are affixed to vehicles before painting.
This means that the type plate, the screws and the rivets are painted in the colour of the vehicle itself.

The Grand Cherokee Model ZJ was produced up to and including model year 1995.
The Z model was manufactured from MY 1996.
Characteristics of the Type Plates: magnetic
Letter heights: about 4,5 mm.
The maximum permissible weight for the Jeep Wrangler (Model YJ) is visibly crossed out at the manufacturing plant where it is produced.
To do this it is necessary to remove the type plate.
The painted rivets are removed in this process.
New, unpainted rivets are used to affix the corrected type plate back onto the vehicle.
Furthermore, it is possible that the type plate on older versions of the Jeep Wrangler (YJ) is partially covered by a plastic covering which has been glued on in such a way that only the VIN and the maximum permissible weight can be seen.
Metal type plates were installed up to model year 2000; subsequently type stickers have been used.
Type stickers
Both black type stickers with white text and white stickers with black text are used.The information on the black type stickers is written on using a laser engraving process and can therefore be felt.
The stickers have DAIMLER CHRYSLER CORP: written on them.
Starting in MY 2006 these stickers were given additional safety features, namely:Break grain: Parallel running stairs-shaped curved ones an inbuilt break-off grain consisting of : a series of parallel stepped curved lines (see the images below in Section 2.2)
An infinitely repeating sequence of words: „Chrysler auto Dodge Jeep“, over several lines, visible in slanting light (see the images below in Section 2.2).
N.B.:Little notice is taken of the words “Chrysler Dodge Jeep” when putting information on the type plates, as they can only be seen in slanting light.
It may happen therefore, that these can be upside down in relation to the information applied with the laser engraving process.
Starting 18 April, 2007, from VIN 7Y567459, white type stickers have been used in the Graz plant for the WH, LE and RG models.
In some vehicles made in the U.S.A., Mexico and Canada, white type stickers have already been in use since January 2006. Attention: Use depends on manufacturing plant.
The white type stickers have: „DAIMLER CHRYSLER CORPORATION“ written on them and no special security features.

Since June 2009, type stickers on which „Chrysler Group LLC“ is written have been used.
As the white stickers used before, these stickers do not have any special security features, either.

The type sticker on the Crossfire
The new type sticker on the Chrysler Crossfire is located on the B-pillar on the front passenger’s side. The text is put on by laser (like Mercedes). It can be felt, and the word ‘Chrysler’ and the Chrysler emblem are visible in slanting light.
The date of manufacture (Date of MFR) of the vehicle is on the left of the type sticker, in, for example, the following format: 12/03 (December 2003), and beneath this entry there is the entry MDH (Month – Date- Hour) e.g.: 121914 (December, 19th day, 14th hour).

The type code plate is screwed or riveted onto the body shell and painted over in the colour of the vehicle.

On 3.0 litre engines the stamped engine number (3) is located on the left-hand side of the engine block beneath the high pressure pump, together with the 4-digit main bearing identifier (2) and the 6-digit cylinder bore identifier (1).
2.8 litre CRD VM engine 4-cylinder common rail turbo diesel in-line engine (sales code ENS)
The 2.8 litre 4-cylinder common rail direct injection Diesel engine is an in-line engine with hanging valves. The 2.8 litre engine comes with a turbocharger, intercooler and AGR cooler.
On the 2.8 litre engine the engine number is on the engine block on the left, above the starter.
The imprint consists of grooves, one above the other.

Starting model year 2010 (model year code A) Mercedes engines, 2.2 liter CRD, manufacturer’s code OM 651) have been installed in the Dodge Caliber and the Jeep Patriot.
The VW diesel engine installed before is no longer used in these series.

The 2.0 litre engine is produced as a 4-cylinder in-line engine with a double overhead cam. It is a 2.0 litre common rail Diesel engine.
The engine number is behind the oil filter housing at the back of the engine block on the rear flange.
The serial number contains information about the date that the engine was built.
4.0 litre 6-cylinder SOHC spark ignition engine (sales code EGS)
The 60° V6 4 litre engine has a single overhead cam, hydraulic tappets and four valves per cylinder. The engine number is on the rear of the engine block, right underneath the left cylinder head.
3.7 litre 6-cylinder Magnum spark ignition engine (sales code EKG)
The 3.7 litre engine is a 6-cylinder 90° V engine with an overhead cam. The engine number is on the front right of the engine block.
Appearance of the engine number
The engine number consists of the last 8 characters of the VIN (the year of manufacture, the manufacturing plant and the serial number).
The engine number is made on a smoothly ground surface by a needle punch.
Access to the engine number is particularly difficult on all terrain vehicles and vehicles with more powerful engines.
Engine number sticker
On 5.7 litre HEMI engines (Chrysler auto 300 C and Chrysler 300 C Magnum) a sticker with the engine number is placed near the plastic covering on the engine cover.
On 3.0 litre CRD engines a sticker with the engine number and other data is located on the engine block; it is necessary first to remove the plastic covering and to lift the radiator hose somewhat.
In the first line this sticker (B) contains the item number, the model/design, the assembly plant, the engine number and a check number.
The second line contains the assembly plan date and the third contains data on the steering and engine capacity.
The separately stamped engine number (A) is in the area to the left of and below the sticker; it can only be seen once the radiator hose has been lifted away.
2.0 litre 4-cylinder 16V Diesel engine (VW pump-jet ) sales code ECD
This is installed in the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot and Chrysler Sebring MY 2007
The cover for the timing belt has a sticker containing the complete engine number (in appearance and content it is IDW VAG products).
There is a partial sticker on the vacuum container in the engine compartment; the last 5 digits on this represent the final sequence of the engine number TEY0106 26191
With 2.0 litre CRD engines is in the dental strap protection (cover) a glue with various data – under it also VIN-PIN – obviously

Gearbox number:
The gearbox number, like the engine number, consists of the last eight characters of the VIN. It is also applied by needle punch.
The location, however, is not filed smooth.
