If you’re a Smart owner, you’re probably familiar with the unique driving experience it provides. Its compact size, rear-wheel drive, and turbocharged engine make it a joy to drive. However, when it comes to the gearbox, things can get a little confusing. In this article, we’ll dive into the Smart gearbox number, explaining what it is and why it matters.
What is the Smart Gearbox Number?
The Smart gearbox number refers to the type of gearbox used in the car. The Smart was produced with two different gearbox types: a six-speed manual and a semi-automatic five-speed gearbox. The Smart gearbox number is important when it comes to replacing or repairing the gearbox, as the parts required will vary depending on the gearbox type.
Location of the Smart Gearbox Number
To find the Smart gearbox number, you can follow these steps:
- Locate the gearbox – The Smart gearbox is located on the underside of the vehicle, typically towards the rear.
- Clean the gearbox – Use a degreaser and a rag to clean the area around the gearbox. This will make it easier to locate the gearbox number label.
- Look for the gearbox number label – The Smart gearbox number label should be located on the gearbox casing. It may be a metal plate or a sticker with information about the gearbox, including its serial number and manufacturing date. The label may also include other information, such as the gearbox oil specification and capacity.
- Check the vehicle documentation – If you’re unable to locate the Smart gearbox number label, you can also check the vehicle’s service manual or registration documents. These documents may include information about the gearbox number and other details about the vehicle.

Location on the Series 454
The Smart gearbox number is on the front underside of the bell housing (as seen in the direction of travel) and is relatively easy to find from below. It is stamped onto the bell housing and is also found on a sticker.
Errors on the Smart Gearbox Sticker on the 454 Series
The serial number has been entered wrongly on the Smart gearbox label of diesel-engined 454 Series vehicles (Smart forfour). In this serial number range (beginning with the letter “T”) the letter “O” is placed after the serial number. The correct entry should have been “0” (zero).
All diesel-engined vehicles of this series produced in the period from July to December 2004 (roughly 11 000 vehicles) have been affected. Diesel-engined vehicles can be identified by the model code 000 or 001.
Example:
WME454000….
WME454001…
Gearboxes with part number MN 900657, starting with serial number 0041263, and Gearboxes with part number MN 130195, starting with serial number 0042500, do not contain this error.
Note for FADA searches with gear number (on series 451)
From the found gear number, only the last 6 digits (serial number) should be used.
To get to the required 14-digit gearbox number, the following possible additions are preceded by:
717 480 50 … for VIN-model 451.330 / 451.331
717 481 50 … for VIN-model 451.330 / 451.331 / 451.332 / 451.380
717 482 50 … for VIN-model EK3.1XX (U.S. vehicles)
717 483 50 … for VIN-model 451.300 / 451.301
717 484 50 … for VIN-model 451.333
The VIN-examination are specified here for coupe vehicles (4th place in VIN-type a “3”); the same is true for the convertible vehicles (4th place in VIN-type “4”)
In summary, the Smart gearbox number is an important identifier for Smart car owners when it comes to replacing or repairing the gearbox. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can locate the gearbox number and ensure that you get the correct parts for your vehicle. If you’re having trouble finding the Smart gearbox number or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to consult a qualified mechanic or contact the manufacturer for help.
