Volkswagen VIN Lettering
On older models the Volkswagen VIN Number was stamped using a computer-controlled compressed air process. The characters should therefore always be in a straight line. The depth of the impressions only may vary, due to fluctuations in the compressed air. The Volkswagen VIN Number always begins and ends with an asterisk. |
A so called etching process began to be used starting with approximately model year 2000. This produces a metallic font. Since more or less 2005 the Volkswagen VIN Number on some models has been protected from rust with either a transparent film or with wax. |
The VIN always begins and ends with an asterisk. |
With vehicles in the work Puebla/Mexico are made, only the VIN is limited after ” European structure Volkswagen VIN Number “ with stars – see detailed pictures to the Golf VIN V Variant and Jetta. |

The roboter writes the last stroke of the star usually from right above (“01:30”) to left below (07:30) (variations are possible!) | |

Both the VIN and the asterisk can vary in appearance, depending on the particular model and the assembly plant where it was produced.
Volkswagen VIN Number Visible
In addition, a so called ‘visible Volkswagen VIN Number ’ on a small plastic plate or on a black film is located on the left side of the dashboard. It is visible from outside. On recent models the idea of the visible VIN has been adopted as a standard for European models.
Location and appearance of the visible VIN:

On some models such as the Phaeton, Passat 3C, Polo (depending on the works!) and Touran GP, the visible VIN is on a foil with VW emblems (visible in slanting light). However, for reasons to do with production, it is also possible to use the pure black foil for vehicle tracing purposes.

It has seemed, that gulf from the work Brussels with a Passat-VIN were delivered and reverse, i.e. one VW GOLF with the VIN “WVWZZZ31Z.B……” instead of “WVWZZZ1GZ.B……”.
Reason for it is the fact, that in the work Brussels the models Golf and Trade wind on a common assembly line are produced and themselves in such cases the blow work at the 7th and 8-th place did not change.
In 1998 VW-Golf-Variant also became in Work Osnabrück, with Karmann, made.
In the work Poznan became approx. 200 VW Passats made.
