The Jaguar VIN number is a 17-character code that provides a unique identity to every Jaguar vehicle. The VIN number consists of a combination of letters and numbers that represent various information about the vehicle, including its country of origin, manufacturer, model, engine size, and more.

Visible Jaguar VIN Number
In addition to the stamped Jaguar VIN Number, all newer models also have a “Visible VIN”. On the XJ, the visible VIN was introduced in model year 1990, starting with VIN …594576. Visible VINs are engraved onto an aluminium plate and can be seen beneath the windscreen on the left side. This is not a substitute for the Jaguar VIN Number on the bodywork. Exception on Model XE see below

Example Jaguar XJ (X351)
After the acquisition of the manufacturer Jaguar by the Tata Group changed the company name in “JAGUAR LAND ROVER LTD” and the interior code has been repealed again
Here also model F-Type (X152), but deviations:
– company name „Jaguar Cars Ltd“
– Typography of „0“ (zero) is divergent (without a slash)
The XE is produced at the Land-Rover plant Solihull and that is the reason for using the foil with trained honeycombs-shaped break places by Land-Rover for the visible VIN.
Jaguar VIN Lettering
The Jaguar VIN Number is stamped on or is placed on by etching at newer models in a straight. The VIN on all newer models always has an asterisk at both ends (exception: the XJ 220). All characters in a VIN are the same size. The Jaguar VIN Number in the engine compartment is covered with transparent foil to protect it from corrosion.

On vehicles until the mid of the 1980`s the VIN was smashed by hand and can hence, deliver a squalid typeface (here Jaguar XJ Double Six)

If at the works a mistake is made when applying a VIN, this is then crossed out legibly and the correct VIN is placed next to it.
Exceptions:
Before the VIN structure was standardised in the year 2000, differences were made between European and U.S. VINs of Jaguar cars, too. Accordingly, there are different VIN parts (vehicle descriptor section) for the same car.
Jaguar had the European VIN structure also punched in Jaguar cars in the U.S. cars before standardisation; only the stickers and the visible VIN refer to the U.S.VIN.
Irrespective of the U.S. labels and the entries in the U.S. titles (car documents), however, the car has to be registered (after re-import) in Europe with the actual VIN, i. e. the punched-in VIN as stored in the Jaguar database.
