In General:

In the absence of binding legal provisions in volvo  there is no unified system of designation and placement of identification numbers and data plates!

Since nearly all manufacturers produce machines worldwide, this can, depending on the machines involved, lead to variations in these descriptions.

In case of doubt, contact the manufacturer!

Volvo Construction Equipment – Europe GmbH construction machines can be identified from the following numbers:

  Location (short description)
Serial number

VIN/PIN

-in  the frame
-onn the type plate
-on additional type plate
Engine Number – at the engine
Gearbox Number – on the gearbox

1. Vehicle identification number (VIN / PIN):

The designation for the chassis number is not fixed due to a lack of binding provisions and a miscellany of production plants. Here, the following designations:

1. Serial number

2. VIN (Vehicle identification number)

3. PIN (Product information number)

are used and frequently used in varying lengths! (7 – 14 characters)

From January 12, 2005 17-digit VINs according to DIN 10261 have been introduced in a number of machine models. The period when this occurred varies, depending on the manufacturing plant and machine concerned. Thus the 17-character VIN was only introduced on large wheel loaders starting with the 2008 model.

1.1 Vehicle serial numbers

1.1.1 Location of the serial number on Compact Wheel Loaders

Depending on the model, the VIN is located on the right side of the front frame (as viewed from the driver’s seat) or on the female part of the articulated joint.
Example: L 45 B
Example: L 50F

1.1.1.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

After introduction of 17-digit VIN

1.1.2 Location of the VIN on wheel loaders

On the right, as seen in the direction of travel, in the area of the pivot joint.
Example: L 120
In the models of the F-series made after January 2, 2008, the 17-digit VIN is located on the left side.
Example: L 60F

1.1.2.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

Example: L 120
In models made after January 2, 2008, the chassis number has 17 digits.
Example L 90F

1.1.3 Location of the VIN on backhoe loaders

The VIN is stamped on and is located on the front frame, on the right, seen in the direction of travel.

1.1.3.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

The VIN stamping is shallow and painted over

1.1.4 Location of the VIN on compact excavators

1. On light models it is on the cab frame.
2. On the heavier models it is on the grab arm holder.

1.1.4.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

Example: 17-digit

1.1.5 Location of the VIN on wheeled excavators

The VIN is stamped on and is

1. Beneath the cab on newer machines, on he right, as seen
from the driver’s seat, sometimes additionally on the base frame (as in older machines)
2. On older machines it is on the frame, near the right front wheel.

2. Frame

1.1.5.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

17-digit

1.1.6 Location of the VIN on crawler excavators

1.1.6.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

Example: 17 digit

1.1.7 Location of the VIN on articulated haulers

The VIN is above the riveted type plate, on the left as viewed in the direction of travel, beneath the driver’s cab.

1.1.7.1 Form and appearance of the VIN

1.2 Breakdown of the serial number / FIN / PIN

(until the introduction of the 17-character VIN)

Caution !!
The length of the numbers can vary depending on the date of construction, type of machine and the production plant!

L30BV 1853171

1 = Model designation
2 = Consecutive serial number

Caution !!
Number 2 (the serial number segment) is often described as a PIN or serial number and is often listed only as such in the missing vehicles lists.

Therefore when making trace requests do one with the complete VIN and one with just the serial number!!!

1.2.1 Breakdown the serial number / VIN / PIN according to DIN 10261
(from January 2005)
Starting on 12 January 2005, 17-character VINs were introduced.

Older versions can still occur, depending on the type of machine and the production plant.

In cases of doubt, check with the manufacturer.

2. Type Plate:

2.1 Location of the type plate

2.1.1 Compact wheel loaders

on the frame, at the front, on the right

2.1.2 Wheel loaders

on the frame on either the left or the right

2.1.3 Backhoe loaders

on the frame on either the left or the right

2.1.4 Compact excavators

at the front, on the frame, beneath the cab, on either the left or the right

2.1.5 Wheeled excavators

On older models between the hydraulic cylinders on the grab arm
On newer models at the front, on the right, beneath the driver’s cab

2.1.6 Crawler excavators

At the front on the right, beneath the driver’s cab

2.1.7 Articulated haulers

On the left side, beneath the driver’s cab

2.2 Form and appearance of the factory plate

Depending on the type of machine and the production plant

With one part
With two parts

2.3 Additional plates

In addition to the VIN plates comprising the CE mark (for EU type approval), type plates comprising information e.g. on the axle load are affixed according to national regulations in the manufacturing country. (without CE mark)

Example Germany
Example Italy

3. Engine Number:

In an inquiry concerning the engine identification number, the engine specification number has to be indicated as well, since otherwise it cannot be related to a VIN.

Example: Spec.No
Example: Engine number

They mainly use engines produced for commercial vehicles (trucks).

3.1 Location of the engine number

N.B.:

Depending on the type of machine, the engine can be fitted in different alignments!

Examples:

6-l engine, as installed in the L60, L70, L90 E and F series, for example. The engine identification number is embossed on the right side. Besides, the number is indicated on a plastic plate on the valve cover and on the left side of the body.

1 = engine identification number embossed
2 = engine data plate

9-l engine (D10B) installed in Type L150E from serial numbers 6001 to 8003

9-l engine (D10B) installed in Type L150E from serial numbers 6001 to 8003
12-l engine installed in Types L180E and L220E
12-l engine (D12D) installed in L150F, L180F and L220F
1 = engine identification number embossed
2 = engine data plate

The engine number can be applied using the dot-matrix process or just punched on.
Example:

3.2 Appearance of the engine number

The engine number can be applied using the dot-matrix process or just punched on.

Some engines have an additional data plate on which the engine number can be seen, but this is often designated as a ‘serial number’.
These plates are located on the valve cover and/or on the engine block.

Examples:

3.3 Breakdown of the engine number IN Volvo

The engine number breaks down into:

Example: D13135204
D13 = Engine type OF Volvo (Capacity)
135204 = Serial number

4. Gearbox number:

4.1 Location of the gearbox number

The gearbox number IN Volvo is located on a riveted data plate on the gearbox. Its location can vary depending on the type of machine.

In an inquiry concerning the transmission identification number, the unit number of the transmission has to be indicated as well, since otherwise it cannot be related to a VIN.

Examples:

5. Vehicle Keys:

Volvo machines are equipped with only one locking system.

Every machine can therefore be opened/driven with a universal key.
