In works enquiries or enquiries submitted through the general importer in the VEDOC system there or in FADA online enquiries relating to Smart vehicles up to and including model year 2002, the part of the VIN (as described in the description of the VIN structure from MY 2003) which describes the vehicle, and the 12th position of the VIN are provided with a number which differs from the number stamped in the vehicle.
The reason: To retain the user friendliness of the VEDOC system for workshops after the takeover of Smart in 1999 and the introduction of the world manufacturer identifier code ‘WME’, Daimler AG ensured that the old Smart VINs would be internally recoded and displayed in accordance with the new post MY 2003 VIN structure; it was necessary however to introduce a difference in order to avoid the occurrence of double VINs in VEDOC. This difference is shown at the 12th position on vehicles from 1999 to 2002 by using a number for the model year in relation to the size of the consecutive serial number (see table):
