The model year codes are changed in the Summer of the previous year (e.g.: a vehicle produced in July 2004, would already have the model year code for 2005, i.e. 5 instead of 4).

The VIN codes of VW models delivered to France are pre-dated by one year, e.g.: the VIN of a car manufactured in 1990 – normally indicated by an “L” – has an “M”, which is the code for 1991.

6   =   Production Plant
H = Hannover for the LT 2
6 = Düsseldorf/Ludwigsfelde (DaimlerChrysler) for Crafter
7   =   Serial number
Each production series uses an ascending serial number which has nothing to do with the model year. This always has 6 digits. After 1 million vehicles the series begins again with 000001, but this means that several models years have already elapsed.
