Volkswagen engine number:
Location of the Volkswagen engine number:
The Volkswagen engine number is stamped with a NC-steered machine by a stable gouge. With earlier construction years the engine number with a needle was stamped. If this needle broke off, the incomplete in Volkswagen engine number was polished away and by hand new smashed.
The engine number in more recent 3 and 4-cylinder engines is located above the transition to the gearbox or an a surface-ground position on the front side of the engine near the gearbox.
In addition to the etched the Volkswagen engine number, the complete engine number can also be read off from a sticker on the engine. This can normally be read easily from above. On newer models it is sometimes concealed by the engine covering. The engine sticker can look different according to work and year and is produced only with an easy pressure. Accordingly forgeries of the engine sticker were also already ascertained.
On newer models it is sometimes concealed by the engine covering. Sometimes, however, particularly on older vehicles, this sticker can have been worn off in vw phaeton w12 .
Breakdown of the Volkswagen engine number
In vw phaeton w12 vehicles, the engine number is an 8 or 9-character code. The number can begin with 2 letters, with 3 letters or with a number and a letter. The engine number sometimes has an asterisk on both sides; sometimes none at the beginning, and sometimes none at all. Gaps sometimes occur between the individual blocks.
The engine number of vw phaeton w12 may be composed as in the following examples:
a) 2 letters / 6 numbers e.g.: PT 021409
b) 1 number / 1 letter / 6 numbers e.g.: 1 Z 594703
c) 3 letters / 6 numbers e.g.: AFB 109610
d) 3 letters / 1 letter / 5 numbers e.g.: BKC A 06928
At the Chemnitz plant, an 8-digit serial number is stamped onto the engines, which only indicates the number of engines produced at that plant.
From 1991 to 1995, the engine numbers saved onto the VIN were often incomplete due to computer problems. There are even engine series with numbers such as AB 000000 on the market. It should be pointed out that engine labelling is not required by law in Germany.
The engine identification letters are in addition also found on the technical service sticker in the boot and on new vehicles also on the type plate.
See Annex for a list of engine identification letters.
Replacement engines receive the same number as the engine they replace, but with an extra character.

In addition, a so called ‘visible VIN’ on a small plastic plate or on a black film is located on the left side of the dashboard. It is visible from outside. On recent models the idea of the visible VIN has been adopted as a standard for European models.
Location and appearance of the visible VIN:
On some models such as the Phaeton, Passat 3C, Polo (depending on the works!) and Touran GP, the visible VIN is on a foil with VW emblems (visible in slanting light). However, for reasons to do with production, it is also possible to use the pure black foil for vehicle tracing purposes.
Volkswagen vin lettering
On older models the volkswagen vin was stamped using a computer-controlled compressed air process. The characters should therefore always be in a straight line. The depth of the impressions only may vary, due to fluctuations in the compressed air. The VIN always begins and ends with an asterisk.
A so called etching process began to be used starting with approximately model year 2000. This produces a metallic font. Since more or less 2005 the VIN on some models has been protected from rust with either a transparent film or with wax.
The VIN always begins and ends with an asterisk.
With vehicles in the work Puebla/Mexico are made, only the volkswagen VIN is limited after ” European structure VIN “ with stars – see detailed pictures to the Golf VIN V Variant and Jetta.
Both the VIN and the asterisk can vary in appearance, depending on the particular model and the assembly plant where it was produced.
It has seemed, that gulf from the work Brussels with a Passat-VIN were delivered and reverse, i.e. one VW GOLF with the VIN “WVWZZZ31Z.B.…..” instead of “WVWZZZ1GZ.B……”.
Reason for it is the fact, that in the work Brussels the models Golf and Trade wind on a common assembly line are produced and themselves in such cases the blow work at the 7th and 8-th place did not change.
In 1998 VW-Golf-Variant also became in Work Osnabrück, with Karmann, made.
In the work Poznan became approx. 200 VW Passats made.
Volkswagen type plate:
Location of the volkswagen type plate
1. On the upper side of the right suspension strut dome, for example, Passat (3B)
2. On the subframe, right of the middle, for example, Lupo
3. On the radiator yoke, on the right, for example Golf III, LT
4. On the radiator yoke, on the left, for example, volkswagen Polo (6N)
5. On the front side of the right suspension strut dome, for example, Golf IV, Fox, Polo 9N
Touran, Sharan (old), Polo 6R, Caddy III, Golf V/VI, Golf V/VI Plus, Golf V/VI Variant, Jetta 1K, Eos, Passat (3C), Scirocco, Tiguan, Touareg (7P) and volkswagen Amarok:
The vw type plate is stuck to the left B-spar. Depending on the model, it is attached to the front side of the B-pillar or underneath the edge plate of the door.
Older vehicles exported to Austria do not normally have a type plate as they are not mandatory in Austria. For reasons of simplicity during production however, some vehicles exported to Austria may have type plates..
Composition of the vw type plate (old version)
Length: 89 mm
Width: 44 mm
The plates consist of blackened or browned aluminium, with the lettering ‘burned on’ by laser.
Replacement plates are exclusively manufactured at the Hanover plant, using a laser.
Some vw type plates have been produced which used a different typography from the examples shown above. In this case, the figure “3” was round at the top and did not have sharp corners. There was an upstroke on the figure “7” on the left.
Tear-off edge: On each genuine type plate in the ‘raw state’ there is a small plate on the right (see No 7 for an explanation), on which the key number is engraved. This small plate is broken off before it is installed, producing a sharp edge.
Notch: Every genuine volkswagen type plate has a notch in its bottom edge (approx. 0.5 – 1 mm deep).
Production line number: The small, one digit number must always be present. It may, however, be partly hidden.
7-digit production identification number. See point 3 for further details.
Sort number: The sort number has four characters. It may be missing from genuine plates, but this is seldom the case.
Key tag: (see also No. 2).
VW Sharan type plate
The type plate is made of adhesive metal foil. Any attempt to remove this foil destroys it.
The adhesive foil on the new model is black.
The 7-digit number on the extreme right on Sharan plates keine a production identification number (PKN) !!!!
New version of the volkswagen type plate (adhesive plate)
The type plate exists with vehicles for the European market from a black Klebefolie. This goes out of shape while departing. VW uses (partially within of the same model and model year) foils of different manufacturers, so that the so-called “fingernail test” are differently strong can.
Also become with newer models often already foils with in Sloping light visible VW logo uses, however, partially also come still purely black foils for the application.
Nevertheless, with the signs for the European market must type sign, visible VIN and the glue with the VIN ending from the same foil kind exist, because these signs together on a foil curve gelasert become.
In VW T5 became for a short time (2003 – 2004) – a precise time containment is not right possibly – a types adhesive plate with break places (wavy lines like the carpenter’s foil in BMW). This types adhesive plate read relatively easily depart.
A 7-character production identification number is normally located on the right edge.
The 3 engine identification letters on newer vehicles are in the second, right-hand vertical row. The letters behind represent a sub-classification of the engine. The Fox is an exception. The Fox does not have any vertical entries on its type plate.
Caution: The corners of the foil plates must all have been made precisely round by laser. If not: Forgery suspicion!!!
Spare types sign:
If an original type plate or sticker has been lost or damaged, a replacement type plate can be ordered from an authorised VAG dealer. These stickers are centrally produced in Kassel on behalf of the entire VAG concern in the central spare parts organisation. They are also registered there.
This spare types sign in the PKW which begins against the norm with the number “8” is recognizable.
Type plate for VW Passats produced in Bratislava
The identification plate below was used in VW Passats produced in Bratislava. According to information provided by VW, these are replacement factory plates, which were being used up. Although production occurred in Bratislava, the 11th character of the VIN has an “E” for Emden.
Similar plates were also used on the VW Golf (plant letter ‘W’), which was produced in Sarajevo before the war in Yugoslavia.
Type plates for North America
Type plates intended for use on the North American market also use silver as well as black foil (see above). The entries are also made by laser. As on the black foil, silver foil with a VW logo visible in slanting light is used on
Pursuant to US and Canadian legislation, the type plates are stuck on in the area of the driver’s door, i.e. on the B-spar.
Production Identification Number – PKN:
The production identification number is an internal control number stamped onto the body shell before it comes to the assembly line.
This number can be used in the FADA system to trace the VIN. Enter the numbers corresponding to the assembly plant (see VIN breakdown/Point 6 Assembly plant) and the year of production (not the model year) and the PKN to obtain the VIN.
Example: PKN 35 1 5168 taken from an EOS.
Use the logical sequence to determine the date of construction – here parts of 07/2008 and 08/2008 – thus 2008 is the year of construction.
The EOS was assembled at the Setubal/Palmela works in Portugal – according to the table the internal works code is 43.
The production identification number contains 7 characters broken down as follows:
42 = Week of the year
5 = Day of the week
0087 = Serial number
Week of year:
The 1st and 2nd digits of the production identification number represent the week of the current year (not the week of the model year). Numbers higher than 52 are found on duplicate plates.
Another difference is found in specially manufactured cars. In this case, the production identification number begins with “59-0-….”.
Day of the week:
1 = Monday until 6 = Saturday
0 = (or also 8 on older versions of the Polo) exact production day not given
7 = Vehicle planned at a later stage
The year of construction cannot be deduced from the production identification number.
It can be found in a number of different places inside the vehicle:
– oon the type plate
– on the technical service sticker (see also Section 8.2/Technical service sticker for possible exceptions)
– on a separate data carrier
The production identification numbers on both data carriers inside the vehicle must be identical!
Location of the gearbox number
The gearbox number is placed on a smoothly ground spot on the bell housing. It is either stamped or needle punched.
Exception: On gearboxes made by Aisin the gearbox number is on a small riveted metal plate.
Examples of gearbox number locations
Breakdown of the gearbox number
As well as the gearbox identifier, the gearbox number also contains the date of manufacture.
The gearbox code is composed of two or three letters, or a number and a letter. The five digits which follow merely comprise the date of manufacture.
1 = Gearbox identifier (as of 2009)
2 = Day
3 = Month
4 = Year (last digit of the year)
5 = Works(here 14: Kassel)
6 = 1st Variant: Time(here: 12:34 h)
2nd Variant: Serial number
7 = 1st Variant: Serial number
2nd Variant: Shift
Aisin gearboxes are an exception:
Aisin gearbox numbers consist of a 3-character gearbox letter code and a serial number
Code Number on the Radio, Navigation and CD Changer:
Appearance and location of the radio number
Starting with the letter ‘’Y’’ (2000), the radio number can be checked in the VW works.
In future an individual number on the device could cancell . She would become then only in the device store .
Normally radio numbers stampe or needle punched onto the unit housing. There also a sticker with the radio number attache to the right-hand side of the radio unit. On some units the number appears for a third time on a sticker on the top of the unit. Each manufacturer has its own sticker.
Some examples of currently fitted radio units:

Technical Service Label:
The technical service label printe by computer and made of adhesive paper. It contains important data for the purpose of search and identification.
Customer service glue often remove after Umfrisierung of the passenger car. In most cases, however, bits of it left sticking on the panel. If you soak these in solvent, they can be removed. Against a backlight, the VIN or other data can be read.
All four corners of the customer service sticker must go precisely around low-cut be, otherwise: Forgery suspicion!!!
Location of the technical service label
On the Convertible the sticker is in the boot on the rear seat back.
The technical service label on the Sharan is located on the inside of the glove compartment hatch.
On older versions of the T4 the technical service sticker is located on the inside of the left A-column. The small storage compartment to the left of the steering column must lower before it can be seen.
On the new version of the T4 and of the T5 the sticker in the driver’s foot well stuck to the bottom of some trimming underneath the dashboard.
What the technical service label looks like and the information it contains
1. Production identification number
Some vehicles have come to notice on which a ‘0’ use for the code for the day of the week in the PKN on the technical service sticker (see also the Production Identification Number section). A different number appears in VW’s own manufacturer’s system!
2. Sales code
5. Fitted accessories
6. Engine identification letters

Volkswagen vehicle keys:
Since the introduction of the Touareg and Touran (model years 2003 and 2004), and in all subsequent newly introduced models, the transponders in the keys have been readable. That is to say that the VIN stored in the key can identify at the VW works.
