The model year codes are changed in the Summer of the previous year (e.g.: A vehicle produced in July 2000, would already have the model year code for 2001, i.e. 1 instead of Y).

The VIN codes of VW models delivered to France are postdated by one year, e.g. the VIN of a car manufactured in 1990 – normally indicated by an “L” – has an “M”, which is the code for 1991.
