KTM

KTM motorcycles can be identified from the following numbers:

Location of Number:
Vehicle identification number – on the steering head, at the front, on the right
– 640 Adventure or 640 LC4 on the steering head, at the front, in the middle
– on the type sticker
Engine number (practical up to about the middle of MY 1998) – on the engine block – see engine number

Using the VIN, the dealer or importer (country to which it was exported) to whom the vehicle was first delivered can be identified via the manufacturing plant.

Vehicle Identification Number KTM:

Location of the VIN KTM

KTM VIN Lettering

The VIN has had 17 characters since the latest models entered production. It is ‘needle punched’ after painting and before assembly (until model year 2005).

From MY 2006 (production launch September 2005), the VIN has been etched on.

To protect against corrosion, a plastic film is then stuck over the needle-punched VIN.

Replacement frames come either with no VIN or with the original VIN from the works.

Factory Plate for KTM:

Location of the type plate

Normally attached to the steering head next to the VIN. It is a ready-made sticker, on which the details have been entered by means of a laser printer. According to the manufacturer, this foil will be destroyed by any attempt to remove it.

Exceptions:

640 Adventure and 640 LC4: the factory plate is located on at the front, on the steering head.
950 Adventure: it is also visible from the front, but is located on a cross tube.
990 Adventure: on the right, on a frame tube under the tank; it is partially concealed by cladding but still visible without having to dismantle anything

US models do not have factory plates. But these models do have stickers on various body parts on which the original type approval number can be seen.

Engine Number:

Location of the engine number

The lettering of the engine number is normally needle punched.

Thee engine number on the 50, 65 and 85 models is placed on the engine block using a stylus.

engine numbers on LC 4 and LC 8 engines are found on a smoothly milled part of the engine block.

The engine number on prototypes is applied by hand using an electro marker. Sometimes there are additional data, such a V for Versuch (Trail).

Replacement engines

These already have a complete engine number. Replacement engine housings are delivered without numbers as they fit several different engine types.

Vehicle Keys KTM:

Nowadays all KTM models are normally delivered with two vehicle keys. If they are both present these will lock both the ignition and the handlebar lock. Any discrepancies can only be cleared up through the manufacturer.

KTM motorcycles are not equipped with electronic immobilisers.

K 134 type keys – made by ZADI
K 158 type keys – made by ZADI
Close-up view
When the keys are delivered there is a tag on the plastic connection between the two keys, which contains the name of the company and the key number. It is not possible to link a particular vehicle with this key number.
