1.2 VIN Lettering
1.2.1 Stamped VIN
The VIN is stamped onto the frame before assembly in the “Ferrari Scaglietti” works in Modena. Various stamping techniques are currently in use.

On some vehicles there may often be traces of a previously stamped serial number
which has been partly overstamped by the stamping of the VIN.

1.2.2 Earlier stamping techniques
On older models the number was stamped on by hand:
• The letter *F* (for Ferrari) followed by 3 digits and 2 letters (vehicle type) followed by a 5-digit serial number between two stars.

On the Ferrari Dino the letter *F* has been replaced by the word “Dino”

Shortly before the introduction of her 17-figure VIN was at place of the version name (example 250GT) a version code rightly (see example 3).
The approval number “IGM” (later “DGM”) is located in the second line

The 400 model is an exception to this rule.

2.2 Type Plate – Composition and appearance
The type plate is made of aluminium, 90 x 55 mm. It is attached by means of two rivets and double-sided tape on the back.
New models, such as the 612 Scaglietti, the 599, California and 458, have VIN stickers.

Transmit a photo of the VIN sticker, and Ferrari will be able to say whether it is an original sticker, since pictures of the stickers are recorded at the Ferrari plant.
Height of the letters/digits (VIN): 7 mm (+ 0.5/- 0)
The remaining letters/digits: 4 mm (+ 0.3/- 0)
On the vehicles for the American or Australian markets, the dimensions are 7.8 x 6.8 mm and the plate is located on the A or the B-pillar on the inside of the passenger door.

The type plate has not been changed for many years.
The colour of the type plate changes according to the country of destination.
The following colours have been used on the 308 quattrovalvole since 1982:
- blue for Italy and the Rest of world (RoW)
- red for Belgium
- black for England
In the 1970s (the 1979 512 BB) a form of type plate was used on which part of the VIN was stamped on by hand.
The type plate contains the following information:
- Model
- The approval code (DGM)
- Engine type
- VIN
In the1950s and 1960s a form of type plate was used on which the information was stamped on by hand (the 1969 250 GT).
The type plate contains the following information:
- Model
- Engine type
- VIN

Since stamping of the 17-character VIN began, the vehicle type and the VIN have been stamped onto the upper part of the steering column (easily visible from the exterior).
The Scaglietti has a small plate with the VIN behind the windscreen.

6. Vehicle Keys:
The Ferrari works can identify a VIN using the latest generation transponder keys.
When ordering replacement keys at an authorised dealer, all vehicle keys and the ‘Code Card’ must be produced. In addition, proof of identity and proof of ownership must also be produced.
A total of 7 keys can be programmed in. It is standard practice to programme in all keys so that lost keys can no longer work.
