Aston Martin Engine Number

Aston Martin Engine Number

The Aston Martin engine number can be used at the works to identify a specific vehicle. However importers and dealerships can only identify the engine number using the VIN.

Aston Martin Engine Number Location

The Aston Martin engine number is normally stamped onto the engine block. The position can vary depending on the type of engine. On some engines (e.g. on the DB7 R6-engine and V8 Vantage from 2005) the positioning of the engine number makes it very difficult to read.

In early models (all vehicles prior to the V8 Vantage of the 1990s) the engine number is identical to the last figures of the VIN. For this reason, the same number was punched into replacement engines of these models. Only the manufacturer (Aston Martin Work Service) can find out in their records archive whether a replacement engince has been installed.

Aston Martin Engine Number Appearance

The Aston Martin engine number is punched into the engine block (earlier vehicles), pin-marked/needle-punched (V8 Vantage) or engraved (DB9/DBS starting 2009). Whereas earlier engines were manufactured by Cosworth in Great Britain and have a manually punched-in engine number, the engine numbers of more recent engines, starting 2004, (manufactured in the Aston-Martin engine plant on the site of the Ford plant in Cologne-Niel) have been applied mechanically and thus more precisely.

Some of the newer engines (e.g. V12 engine in the DB9/Virage/DBS) have an engine number sticker at the rear of the engine on a plastic support above the gearbox. On this sticker, you find the engine identification number with engine type and engine serial number. As well as the manufacturing date of the engine.

Aston Martin Gearbox Number

The Aston Martin gearbox number can be used at the works to identify a specific vehicle. This does not apply for the model Cygnet.

Current models are of the transaxle construction type, which means that the gearbox is not flanged to the engine but, for reasons of optimum weight distribution, is located just before the rear axle directly at the differential

Aston Martin Gearbox Number Location

The current Aston Martin vehicles are equipped with gearboxes manufactured by “ZF“ and “Graziano“.
The automatic gearboxes (standard in DB9, DBS, Rapide models) are made by ZF, the appropriate differentials are made by Graziano.
The manual gearboxes (V8 Vantage) and the sport shift gearboxes (automated gearbox, on special request) are completely made by Graziano.
Since MY 2015 a 8-speed automatic transmission (model ZF8HP-70) made by ZF is built in the Rapide, Vanquish and Lagonda Taraf (previous a 6-speed automatic transmission, model ZF6HP-26).

Aston Martin Gearbox Number Appearance

The Aston Martin gearbox number is indicated on a riveted metal plate on the casing. The data on the metal plate are needle-punched by Graziano, with the single dots overlapping; at ZF the data are engraved, the respective starting points of the engravings being clearly visible.

Aston Martin Key

Aston Martin vehicles come with two keys. A total of six keys can be programmed subsequently by an Aston Martin diagnostic tool via an online connection (protected Internet connection with user ID and password) to the host computer at the Aston Martin plan.

While the full version of the diagnostic instruments (worth approx. € 20,000) is only delivered to official Aston Martin dealers, the basic version (worth approx. € 10,000) is also sold to independent dealers/workshops.

The keys do not contain the Aston Martin VIN Number or any service data. The keys do however have a serial number (e.g. T341244), which can be identified at the works using the VIN. In vehicles as from model year 2008, you can also find out the VIN on the basis of the key serial number, as the barcode with the serial number is scanned in the key packaging before the keys are delivered.

Older models have mechanical keys (in the old Ford design) with a remote control appended.

From these keys the mechanical lock code of the key bit can be read, so that it may be possible – if further information is available – to identify the corresponding vehicle.
